10th JCC set to approve inclusion of eight transport infrastructure projects in CPEC

CPEC envisions the development of transportation infrastructure in Pakistan and laying out of new routes for the facilitation of transit trade and enhancement of market accessibility. The federal has decided to present eight transport infrastructure projects for inclusion in CPEC in the 10th meeting of Joint Coordination Committee on CPEC to be held this year. It is noted that the Orange Line Metro Train and Havelian-Thakot highway projects are being completed on fast-track. The concessional financing agreement for Mainline-1 ML-1 project is likely to be finalized this year.

ISLAMABAD: The federal government is set to propose eight new projects relating to transport infrastructure for inclusion in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework 2020-21.

The projects would subsequently be presented for approval in the 10th meeting of Joint Coordination Committee on CPEC to be held this year.

The eight projects include Greater Peshawar Mass Transit Project, 82-kilometre (km) Swat Expressway Phase-II, Karachi Port Development Project, 105km Thar-Chor Railway Line, 22km Hub-Karachi Railway Line, Keti Bandar Port Development Project, 182km Karachi-Quetta-Chaman Motorway and Optical Fibre Phase II.

According to official documents, under the transport infrastructure sector of CPEC, Sukkar-Multan (M-5) Motorway has been successfully completed, while Sukkar-Hyderabad (M-6) section has been proposed to be completed on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

Moreover, Hakla-Dera Ismail Khan section is also under construction.

Similarly, the Zhob-Dera Ismail Khan segment and the Zhob-Quetta segment have also been approved by the government. Construction work on these projects is expected to start in the current fiscal year.

The document added that Orange Line Metro Train in Lahore and Havelian-Thakot highway projects have been completed to a substantial extent.

The government to government Joint Working Group (JWG) on Transport Infrastructure will prepare proposals regarding the realignment of Thakot-Raikot section in the current fiscal year.

Moreover, the concessional financing agreement for the landmark ML-1 project, estimated at $7.2 billion is also expected to be finalised in 2020, after which arrangements will be made for the groundbreaking of the project.
