“As ac-operated linear position sensors, HATR Series is not limited by internal electronics that can fail in extreme environments,” according to the company.

They have welded 19mm metal housing and can operate at up to 204°C – customised versions are available to operate from -129 to 275°C.Sensor windings are potted inside the housing with two-part epoxy. “The LVDTs also withstand high shock and vibrations associated with the cutting and dropping logs into carriers within the sawmills to last for decades,” said NewTek. “Through-bore construction prevents debris, resulting from flying sawdust, from blocking the path of the sensor core for consistent accurate performance.”

Electrical connections are through a radially-mounted connector (see photo).

Units are available in ranges of ±1.27mm to ±250mm, linearity is <0.25% of full range and repeatability is <0.01% of full range.

Associated electronics come in the form of NewTek’s NTC-6000 LVDT signal conditioner, that establishes analogue or digital communications via a RS-485 two-wire multi-drop bus.

The conditioner’s set-up is intended to be for configuration by non-technical personnel. It also a cybersecurity lock-out and tamper detection.
