NEW YORK - According to a study released by International Furnishings and Design Assn., Homes over the next decade will shrink in size, focus on healthier design and be made more amenable to aging.

A study by IFDA members, called Vision for the Future of Home survey, also found that, by 2030, it is likely that many of us will be living with modern design and enjoying modern things like sensor lights, doors, etc. ., and wellness becomes a major priority in the construction and design of houses.

"Whether designers, manufacturers, retailers, marketers or media, we are all experts in our chosen fields as IFDA members and our understanding is diverse and compelling," said Susan Hirsh, a member and director of the research.

Below are the top findings from the study, as well as some comparisons with IFDA members forecast in 2010 when they forecasted the US home for 2020:

Good health leads to success

The aging and well-being environment is rated as high considering in this year's survey, surpassing sustainability and green design. Ninety-six percent of respondents said that aging would be considered in any design program, and 94% said the same about health problems.

By comparison, the lowest figure, 81%, said that sustainability in construction would have an impact on their design plans by 2030. However, 90% said they expected appliances to become more energy-efficient, compared to 83% in a 2010 study.

Wellness features were most common in the bathroom, with 83% expecting to see more features in 2030 homes. Smart glass for mirrors and shower doors was more popular than smart water-saving / bathroom toilets and showers, which was the most popular in a 2010 study.

Modern Furnishing

Fifty-six percent of respondents by 2020 saw 3D printed furnishings grow in popularity, while 62% saw rapid growth in quick-ship furnishings. About 61% predicts the delivery of drones by 2030.

Style-wise, IFDA members predict that moderns will surpass all other categories of style with key margin.

Design Business

The 2020 study also looked at how the interior design community would function. By 2030, 92% predict real-time submissions. The number of online order buyers will continue to rise, according to 83% of respondents, with 73% seeing an increase in the number of customers making their orders.

Seventy-two percent also said customers' tendency to recognize budgets will continue to rise, and respondents strongly agree that customer numbers will not grow in the future.
