Each includes its Mosa.ic framework for integrating multiple operating systems in safety-related or secure systems, and each is built around the LynxSecure separation kernel hypervisor. They “leverage the safety and reliability of Mosa.ic to enable mission critical edge computing”, according to Lynx product management v-p Pavan Singh. “Each is designed to let developers of security and safety critical systems, including certifiable systems, take advantage of work-flows and techniques such as containers and sensor fusion, connect to cloud services, and to scale and adapt to changing market requirements.”

Both the avionics and UAV/satellite versions work with Arm and x86 processor architectures and include LynxOS-178 (a DO-178 certified operating system), LynxSecure, Linux and support for the SR-IOV extension to the PCIe specification.

With its emphasis on preventing interaction between nominally separate operating systems and applications sharing common hardware, satellite constellations carrying payloads owned and accessed by multiple users is one of the predicted applications. Drones, personal aviation and commercial spaceflight are others.

The alpha release of ‘Mosa.ic for Industrial’ removes Lynx’s RTOS and adds Azure IoT Edge and Windows 10 support for x86 platforms, as well as providing virtual PLC function “to let manufacturing organisations scale, reconfigure and update software-driven capacity”, said Lynx. “Future code drops will extend capabilities, including guest operating systems, IoT connectivity and processor architectures.”

Real-time determinism with sub-microsecond latency is claimed for each of the bundles.
