The end-point remains the same, however, with the full release still scheduled for “Q3”. Basically, it is now releasing an extra Developer Preview – the fourth – for developers to test and provide feedback, and pushing back the planned Betas.
The new timeline is pictured above. The main features of Android 11 centre around 5G connectivity, UI support for foldable screens, a smarter keyboard and faster messaging.
Dave Burke, VP of Engineering at Google, writes:“By bringing you the final APIs on the original timeline while shifting the other dates, we’re giving you an extra month to compile and test with the final APIs, while also ensuring that you have the same amount of time between Platform Stability and the final release, planned for later in Q3.”
The original planned Beta 1 release moves to June 3, which will include the final SDK and NDK APIs and will open up Google Play publishing for apps targeting Android 11. Beta 2 moves to July, establishing platform stability, and August will see Beta 3, the Release candidate build for final testing.
